The Health Risk Pool Fund (a.k.a. Risk Pool Fund) is a pooled resource specifically targeted to prevent the derailment of otherwise fully-funded maternal and child health and nutrition projects in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. 

The Risk Pool Fund is a collaborative experiment that makes fast, flexible funding available to pre-selected nonprofits that are encountering an unexpected obstacle that threatens impact.

Roadblocks that could qualify for a Risk Pool Fund Grant include, but are not limited to:

Acts of God

  • Irregular and unpredictable weather event (i.e. flood, drought, fire)
  • Outbreak of conflict, disease

NGO Misfortune

  • Equipment problem
  • Local partner problem
  • Infrastructure disruptions
  • Fraud, embezzlement, theft

Leveraged Roadblocks & Solutions

  • The cost to fix the problem is low compared to the harm it would cause to the impact of the project (e.g. a $25,000 solution to a $1 million project)

Economic or Policy changes

  • Currency fluctuations; demonetization policy; other market effects
  • Government/policy changes (e.g. recent change in import tariffs, etc.)

Funder created obstacles

  • Change in funder strategy/policy
  • Funder policy inflexibility
  • Funder misfortune
  • Change in grant amount/delay in disbursement
